Hi Folks, I've been lurking here for a while without posting any pictures of my work, so, here goes... This is a five string banjo neck I made for an old Orpheum pot. Cheers, Louis ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks Dave. I've been doing more neck building recently, it seems that not too many folks out there are doing this anymore. Louis |

Louis, Very nice work! I love frailing. I got my building start in banjos years ago. Mine were of the Vega persuasion, lots of fun! BTW, is that a skin head? Or one of those that's made of plastic, but has some of the characteristics of skin without the temp/humidity issues? Just curious, as I have some old parts that just might become a banjo someday, and I'm wondering about these "hybrid" heads, for want of a better word. |

Pat, This was my first non-Vega neck. After building a number of brown stained Tub-a-phone necks this project was a bit refreshing. That's one of the new Fiberskin heads. They tend to muffle the higher frequencies some, which might not be a bad thing for banjos! They are a bit thicker that the usual white plastic banjo heads. My favorite heads these days are the Reno Renaissance heads, they are thinner, very lively and they are a nice translucent amber color. Cheers, Louis |

Beautiful work Louis, thanks for posting. A buddy of mine is a terrific banjo player. He has a converted TB3, 1929 with a Frank Neet neck...so I get to hear LOTS about the nuances of neck making. It's quite an art. Again, nice work. |

Thanks for the kind words guys!! Bill, my next project is building myself a conversion neck for a 1925 TB-3. When I'm done I'll have to set aside some time to sit in my rocking chair and play Doc Boggs and Charlie Poole tunes! Cheers, Louis |

Can't pay the rent Start livin' in a tent It's moo a-hoo a-hoovin' day! Haven't thought of those tunes in years. Maybe I'll dig out some of my old timey albums. Amaze my kids, they've never seen vinyl. Charlie Poole Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers Highwoods String Band Kenny Hall and friends (can't remember the others) Can't believe -- and couldn't then -- that people actually paid our little string band money for playing that stuff. Sure was a kick, though. |
